Machame Route

Length:

5 Nights / 6 Days

DAY 1:

MOSHI – MACHAME GATE- MACHAME CAMP

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport; meet our representative and drive to Moshi for your first overnight stay at lodge/ Hotel

It’s 1 hour drive from airport.

DAY 2:

After breakfast at hotel/lodge in Moshi start the drive to Machame gate – 1800 Mt high, passing through the villages of Machame located on the lower slopes of the mountain. After reaching the gate there will be a session for registration before begin your hiking through the rain forest to the first camp on this famous route – Machame camp. At lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery, but due to the comfortable mountain gear, continue a short distance to Machame Camp – 3000 Mt high, for dinner and overnight.

Distance: 11 Km

Hiking Time: 5-7 Hrs

DAY 3:

MACHAME CAMP – SHIRA CAMP

Breakfast will be saved on time following your depart on glades of rain forest and continue on ascending path crossing the little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather and Moorland until the ridge ends. The route will turn west onto a river gorge. You will then arrive at the camp for rest and leisure, dinner and overnight at Shira Camp – 3840 Mt elevation.

Time: 4-5 Hrs

Habitat: Moorland

DAY 4:

SHIRA CAMP – BARRANCO CAMP

You will enjoy breakfast on time following your depart to Barranco Camp. The trail will take you to east up ridge via Junction towards the Peak of Kibo, as you walk the direction changes to Southeast towards Lava Tower – the rock famous as ‘Shark’s Tooth’. Shortly after reaching the second Junction which brings you near to Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 4600 Mt, descend downhill to Barranco Camp at an altitude of 3900 Mt. You end the day at an altitude almost the same as you started the day, this make the day to be very important for acclimatization as you walk higher and slip lower, helps you in preparation for the summit session.

DAY 5:

BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP

Right after breakfast trek the Barranco wall known as “breakfast wall”, a volcanic rock whereby the trail through start near to the camp. Reaching at the top of this wall you will be at an altitude of 4200Mt, get a fantastic view. It will take about 20 minutes to accomplish the trek over this wall before continue across the ridges valleys to Karanga camp -400 Mt, where you will enjoy hot lunch upon arrival and rest for half an hour before continue with trek to Base Camp (BARAFU CAMP) Arrive at Base camp in the evening, rest; dinner and sleep until midnight. Wake-up; have some bites with cup of coffee/tea; put-on proper summit clothes and ready for the last push towards UHURU PEAK.

DAY 6:

BARAFU CAMP – UHURU PEAK – MWEKA CAMP

Right mid night you will wake-up and get enough layers of clothing for the summit session. Soon the trek to Uhuru Peak will start, after couple of hours you will reach Stella point – 5745 Mt, (reaching at this point the certificate will be awarded). This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella point you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you ever likely to see out of Africa. After a short rest the trek will continue to complete the your dream trip to Uhuru Peak – 5895 Mt, about 1 hour to reach the highest point of Africa. Within few minutes you will spend at the summit, capture pictures for memory before descend. The summit session will have completed and descend back to base camp where lunch will be saved to provide you with enough energy walk downhill to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

Time: 6-7 Hrs

After base camp you will descend back through Moorland to rain forest at Mweka Camp.

DAY 7:

MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE

You will enjoy the last breakfast on mountain and thereafter descend downhill through the rain forest from Mweka camp to Mweka gate. At lower elevation it can be wet, so it’s advised to have rain gear close by. At the exit gate you will sign out and your guide will collect certificates thereafter drive to office for a short celebration part and then proceed to lodge/ hotel in Arusha/ Moshi for rest; dinner and overnight.

Marangu Route

Length:

6 Days

DAY 1:

MARANGU GATE- MANDARA HUT

(1800M – 2720M)

Depart from Arusha or Moshi at 08:30 hrs/09:00 hrs respectively, drive to Marangu Gate where registration done befor your trek.

The trail leads through the rain forest of Kilimanjaro, picnic lunch to be consumed at Kisambion point; halfway to Mandara Hut. After lunch continue your hiking through rainforest until reach Mandara Hut, leisure time before taking a short hike to Maundi Crater 340Mt. In a clear day there is great view over the other side of country- Taveta as well as northwest of Mawenzi Peak.

Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut

DAY 2:

MANDARA HUT- HOROMBO HUT

(2720M – 3720M)

After first breakfast on Mountain depart for Horombo hut. The trek will be through moorland, a rocky landscape with desert-like plants. Picnic lunch will be served halfway, trek will continue until reach Horombo Hut. If the weather is clear, the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are well seen. Arrive Horombo Hut at 15hrs and spend the rest of hours for leisure. The small huts accommodate up to 8 people each and provides lodging to hikers ascending, descending and those on acclimatization.

DAY 3:

HOROMBO HUT - MAWENZI TURN HUT - HOROMBO HUT

(3720M – 4600M then back to 3720M)

Breakfast will served on time following leisure day for acclimatization. We suggest hiking up to Mawenzi Turn Hut to allow more acclimatization as will increase the chance to reach Uhuru Peak. The hike will also reward you with a magnificent view of Kibo, before turn around to Horombo Hut for late lunch following leisure hours.

DAY 4:

HOROMBO HUT – KIBO HUT

(3720M – 4750M)

Depart right after breakfast hike through the moorland and alpine desert upper altitude. After 1 hour of hiking the terrain becomes flatter and vegetation begins to disappear. Lunch will be consumed at Middle Red Hill; continue for about two hours through Saddle although environment on the way to Kibo is beak desert with little vegetation, you will see many stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Arrive Kibo Hut around 15:00 hrs, leisure and prepare for a summit session to take a place at mid night.

DAY 5:

 

KIBO - UHURU PEAK – HOROMBO HUT

(4750M – 5895M- 3720M)

At mid night awake for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak – the highest point of Africa-5895M. It will take about five hours of hiking to reach at Gilliman’s point on crater rim – 5,681M. The hike from Gillman’s to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and as far as hike goes the difficult disappears. The crater rim hike takes approximately two hours to reach Uhuru, take pictures before start the descend to Kibo Hut and later further downhill Horombo. On the way down from the summit you will see all magnificent views you could not see while on the way up. After reach at Horombo Hut, rest as it is the last night on mountain.

DAY 6:

 

HOROMBO HUT – MARANGU GATE

(3720M – 1800M)

Enjoy last breakfast on mountain before your descend towards Marangu gate begins. This is last day which complete the 6 days of trekking through Kilimanjaro Mountain; descend through rain forest and careful on steps as the trail can slippery during rainy season. A short lunch break at Mandara Hut before continue and complete descend to the main gate where you meet the vehicle, board and drive to Arusha/Moshi. Little celleration at office, receive Kilimanjaro certificates, later head to hotel/lodge for rest; dinner and overnight.

Rongai Route

DAY 1:

ARRIVE KILIMANJARO AIRPORT – LODGE/HOTEL IN ARUSHA/MOSHI

Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport, meet our representative and drive to your lodge or hotel in Arusha or Moshi for first night stay.

Dinner and overnight (H/B).

DAY 2:

RONGAI GATE – FIRST CAVE CAMP

(1800M - 2600M)

After an early breakfast at lodge/ hotel start the drive about 3 hours from Moshi and 4 hours from Arusha to Rongai gate close to Kenya border. After registration at gate your hiking will begin through forest where you may see or hear wildlife.

Your lunch will be saved on the way up before reaching destination of the day.

The Rongai route is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro because of the long drive to the gate.

Hike Time: 4-6 hours

DAY 3:

 

FIST CAVE – KIKELELWA CAMP

(2600M - 3600M)

After first breakfast on Mountain walk through giant heathers and moorlands to campsite at Kikelelwa.This is realatively a short day during the hike; you will have a great view of Mawenzi in the blue sky day. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 4:

KIKELELWA CAMP – MAWENZI TARN HUT CAMP

(3600M - 4330M)

This is leisure day with more acclimatization activities in the morning and late noon day starts with a morning hike followed a rest in the afternoon and evening.The hike is relatively short but steep.

Mawenzi Tarn Campsite is situated below Mawenzi Peak and offers stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo. Enjoy dinner and overnight.

Hike Time: 4-6 hours.

DAY 5:

MAWENZI TARN HUT – KIBO CAMP

(4330M - 4750M)

This is a fairly gradual walk as it mainly follows the saddle, and it is also possible to go from Mawenzi Tarn hut to School hut – 4750 M, across the lunar landscape of the saddle to the final destination and from there to Uhuru peak, gain the saddle and walk across the desert of screen to a camp not far from Kibo hut ( 3-4 hours; 4730 M). Dinner and overnight.

Hike Time: 4-6 hours.

DAY 6:

KIBO CAMP – UHURU PEAK – HOROMBO HUT

(4750M – 5895M – 3720M)

The ascent to crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is steep until you reach the crater rim at Gilman’s Point.

The hike for Gilma’s Point is a gradual climb and as far as hike goes becomes not very difficult. The altitude however makes the hike long and tiring.

From crater rim it take about two hours; upon reach at Uhuru Peak, capture picture for the memory of your lietime before beginning the descend to Horombo Hut.

Total distance: 15 Km

Hike time:

  • 6 hours to the rim

  • 1.5 hour to Uhuru peak

  • 4 hours down to Kibo

  • 4 hours to Horombo Hut, where you spend a last night on mountain.

DAY 7:

HOROMBO HUT – MARANGU GATE

(3720M – 1800M)

This is the easiest day as you walk downhill and oxygen supply increases; you will reach at Mandara Hut where lunch will be served and soon the descent continues as you complete the hike to Marangu gate; meet the drive and proceed to lodge/hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Dinner and overnight stay (H/B).

Machame Route

DAY 1:

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, after VISA process and all other procedures; meet our representative right upon your check out. Load the vehicle and drive to Moshi - Overnight stay at Lodge/ Hotel.

DAY 2:

DAY 7:

BARAFU CAMP – UHURU PEAK – MWEKA CAMP

DAY 1:

LONDOROSSI GATE – BIG TREE CAMP

Depart right after breakfast in Arusha / Moshi to Londorossi gate where a first stop for registration is always made. After all formalities drive to Lemosho trailhead; upon arrival starting point; a short stop for lunch and re-arrangement before commencing your hike through rain forest to the first campsite – BIG TREE; dinner and overnight.

Hiking Time: 3-4 Hours

Habitat: Rain Forest.

DAY 2:

 

BIG TREE – SHIRA 1 CAMP

After fist breakfast on mountain; start the trek leading out of Rain forest continues through savannah of tall grasses, heather and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As you ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, you will reach the shira ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 Camp. Here, the view of Kibo is beautiful from across the plateau.

DAY 3:

 

SHIRA 1 CAMP – SHIRA 2 CAMP

Explore the Shira Plteau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east towards Kibo’s Glacier Peak, across the plateau which approaches Shira 2 Camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Short hike to Moir Hut, little used campsite on base of lent hills to make an excellent acclimatization and preparation for the following day.

Day 4:

 

SHIRA 2 CAMP – BARANCO

Depart from Shira 2 camp and leave Shira Plateau while continue east up ridge, passing the junction towards Baranco via Lava Tower. As you continue hiking the direction changes to the southeast towards Lava Tower, famous as “Shark’s Tooth” at the second junction leading to Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 4600Mt. Proceed downhill to Baranco Campsite at an altitude of 3950Mt, Although you - end your day at the same elevation you started the day in the morning; it is very important for acclimatization and will help you prepare for summit.

DAY 5:

 

BARANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP

Right after breakfast hit Baranco wall know as breakfast. Reaching the top of Baranco wall – 4200Mt, you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the country side far in the horizon. After a short break of 15 – 20 minutes continue across the ridges valleys to Karanga Valley Campsite where a hot lunch will be served upon arrival following leisure; dinner and overnight.

Hiking Time: 2-3 Hours.

Habitat: Alpine Desert

DAY 6:

 

KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP

After breakfast depart to Barafu Camp (Base camp) where these two routes reach it junction which connects with Mweka trail. Continue few minutes further up to Base Camp where you will be served a hot lunch and hence have completed Southern Circuit of Mount Kilimanjaro which offers view of the summit form many different angles. The rest of afternoon leisure while wait for early dinner following short rest up to mid night. Drinking water is still advised as the preparation for of summit day. The two Peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi are visible in the blue sky or clear day.

DAY 7:

 

BARAFU CAMP – UHURU PEAK – MWEKA CAMP

Right mid night with enough layers of clothing begin your summit session to Uhuru Peak. From Base camp head in northwesterly direction ascend towards Stella Point on the crater rim at – 5745Mt.

This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Pont you will have a short rest and will be rewarded a most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see out of Africa.

Thereafter from Stella Point proceed to for one hour to complete your dream trip at Uhuru Peak. Once you have reached the highest point of Africa Continent capture picture before descend. The descent leads you back to base camp where you will have a short rest and branch being served to allow you continuing with descent downhill to Mweka Camp; dinner and overnight at 3100Mt.

DAY 8:

MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE

Your last breakfast on Mountain will be served at7:30am or bit earlier. After breakfast you descend downhill to Mweka Gate at lower elevation, it can be wet so it is best to have your rain gear close- by. Upon arrival at gate, sign out and drive to lodge/hotel.
